walking landscapes - the sound of the surface

Performance concept in collaboration with Metropolis / Københavns Internationale Teater & Randers kommune

Randers 2021

During the corona lockdown 120 artists were asked to create and live stream each their own 12-hour walk across the landscapes of Denmark. I walked in Randers from mid-day to midnight on the 19th of august 2021. Previous to the walk I interviewed people living in Randers, gathering their walking routes: the habitual ones, the special ones, the boring ones, the important ones, the lost ones etc. I also collected anecdotes connected to the routes.

My walk consisted of

a pair of shoes that recorded my steps across the changing surfaces

a 12-hour route weaved together from the routes of the interviews

12 anecdotes connected to the routes, which were presented as short prose on a small screen - one story each hour

Working with live streaming I choose an aesthetic as if being a player in a computer game. When following audience tuned in, they would see and hear either my two feet walking, or my hands holding up the small screen with short stories from the routes and surrounding landscape.

A big thank you to the people of Randers who shared your routes and tales with me, and a big thanks to game designer Marcel Barboza for sparring on concept and visuals.
